Your C.V.
-
C.V.. or
curriculum vitae are essentially a selling tool. It outlines your
skills and experiences so that a potential employer can see at
a glance. Every employer today asks for a C.V.. A good C.V.. will get
you interviews which lead to job offers. A C.V.. is like a
personal brochure. C.V.. must promote your strengths, aptitudes and
abilities. C.V.. must demonstrate the benefits you can
bring to the employer’s organization.
-
Stick to three
broad heads, in this order: Professional experience even if it is a
summer job [include your designation, dates of tenure, company
name, and a brief description within 20 words of the company’s
nature of business], academic background [only
degrees/diplomas], and personal statistics [date of birth, ability
to relocate, personal interests].
-
Segmentation.
Your short-term course in pottery comes under ‘Hobby’ while your
familiarity with computers is included in ‘Job skills’ or
‘Education’.
-
Spell check. No
one likes bad grammar or the misuse of apostrophes.
-
Positive
personal characteristics. If you’re good at writing or accounts,
mention it. Be honest though.
-
Use a crisp,
professional font like Times News Roman, Tahoma or Arial. Create
sections by playing with the font size, using bold to
differentiate between headings and text matter.
-
Awards and
accomplishments. Mention debates you’ve won, elocutions where you
out-talked every one… But dig out old certificates before you
do this.
-
Work history. If
you have one, that is. Even if you volunteered at the local SPCA,
put it down for posterity. In case you’re wondering, it’s the
society for prevention of cruelty to Animals, which is also why you
must read the next- and last-point.
-
Shore up on
general knowledge for your interview. Go watch some telly!
-
Always be honest
and accurate in writing your C.V.. Make your C.V. simple and as clear
as possible. Your C.V. should not be too lengthy. Your resume
should fit within one page only. A resume should never exceed two
pages. Your name, address, telephone and e-mail contact
details should come right on the top of the first page. It’s
critical to stay accessible by putting your mobile number and
e-mail address on other pages.
-
Details about
your educational background relevant to your desired profession
should be jotted down in a proper manner. If you have
consistently topped your school or ranked third in college, this is
the place to write home about it. Give details about
your qualification-whether the course and your degree/diploma are
recognized by some university. You should mention your
education from S.S.C, H.S.C, Degree/ Diploma in which stream, post
graduation, specialization with academic organizations and the year
of passing.
-
Mention about
your total work experience with job descriptions in brief and the
period worked for every organization. If you had spells
of unemployment, justify the gap by describing what you did during
that time, may be for travel or any personal commitments or
then developing your skills on formal courses.
-
While jotting
down your personal details, academic qualifications, past work
history with the most recent position listed first,
achievements. Use clear headings, simple language and adequate
margins and line spacing.
